Thank you for visiting the UTZ Academy Online. On this page you will find information that will help you determine whether your company can get exempted from an audit against the Chain of Custody Standard.

We recommend to go through the sections in the following order:

    1. What is the Chain of Custody Standard?

    2. When can a company get exempted from a Chain of Custody Standard audit?

    3. Requirements for audit exempted members

    4. How to apply for a Chain of Custody Standard audit exemption?

    6. How to fill out the Chain of Custody Audit Exemption Declaration?

    5. Important documents

    7. Where to find help?

    • 1. What is the Chain of Custody Standard?

The Chain of Custody Standard (ChoC) is a set of requirements designed to provide a high level of confidence that UTZ certified products are physically or administratively (in the case of mass balance) related to UTZ certified producers/producer groups, and ensures the traceability of UTZ certified products. Certification against the Chain of Custody Standard ensures that the products sold by the certified supply chain actor (SCA) are UTZ certified, and have been traded and handled according to the requirements set forth by UTZ.
      • 2. When can a company get exempted from a Chain of Custody Standard audit?

A certification audit to verify compliance with the Chain of Custody Standard is necessary if your company:

        • Legally owns the UTZ certified product(s), and
        • Physically handles the UTZ certified product(s), and
        • Makes a product claim (B2B or B2C)

If one or more of the above-mentioned three points does not apply to your company, an audit is not is not compulsory and you can apply for a Chain of Custody Standard audit exemption in order to receive a license.

In case you are an individual Supply Chain Actor (SCA) or a multi-site SCA (with a central management) you can also apply for a Chain of Custody Standard audit exemption if all of the above-mentioned points do apply to you, but you physically handle less than:

        • 200 Metric Tons (MT) of green coffee per year (total: UTZ and non-UTZ volumes)
        • 100 Metric Tons (MT) of cocoa bean equivalent (total: UTZ and non-UTZ volumes)
        • 200 Metric Tons (MT) of made tea (total: UTZ and non-UTZ volumes)
